Bad Mom Files: I Don't Think Kids Should Be Forced To Share

Share and share alike. It is one of the tenets of childhood. And yet, forced sharing is coming into question by some preschools and parents of little kids.

There are preschools in the US that have written down 'no sharing' policies. They do not force kids to share their toys, instead they have multiples of popular items, or they tell kids that they have to wait their turn. They say that forced sharing creates a feeling of entitlement in the kid who wants -- and gets -- the toy.

STFU Parents: Do Parents Overshare That Much?

We've all done it.

Told a little too much about our kids online. Not just me as a blogger, but anyone who is on Facebook or Twitter. There is a very fine line between providing information, broadcasting great moments and oversharing. So, I have a little empathy for the updates that cross the line, once in a while.

But sometimes there is something so egregious, so ridiculous, that I stare at my screen in disbelief. There are the braggers and the sanctimommies, the oversharers -- they are the parents who believe that the world revolves around them and their children's small achievements.

STFU Parents is for them (yes, stands for Shut the F*ck Up). Or at least it is to make fun of them. And in doing so it also reveals a little bit of ourselves.

Blair Koenig is a childless writer who has been keeping up the blog for four years. She gets over one and half million views per month and has just released a book, STFU Parents: the jaw-dropping, self-indulgent, and occasionally rage-inducing world of parent overshare.

Dad Posts 'Why Is My Son Crying' to Tumblr. Everyone Wishes They Thought Of It

One of the great frustrations of parenting a toddler is the amount of unexpected, unpredictable crying. A typical toddler will cry because their shoes are blue, not red; the cup is green, not blue; and that the grass is  muddy. Car seats, diaper changes and all safety concerns may all be met with a few tears and possibly uncontrollable sobs.

A clever dad created a Why Is My Son Crying Tumblr. He posts a photo of his cute child in tears along with a sardonic answer to the ubiquitous 'why is my son crying' question. Answers range from: "the car seat, always the car seat" to "I told him not to drink the bath water" (pictured below).

Babyproofing Your "Death Trap"

We were errant parents in the babyproofing department (well, not just there). We didn't do anything outside of gates at the tops of stairs (which have become very useful for our dog). No bumpers on the corners of our glass coffee table. No outlet covers, or drawer locks.

And you know what? Our kids hurt themselves sometimes. But so do all kids. They never stuck anything into an electrical outlet though. I just think that in this day and age were are too quick to protect and discourage. We tame everything because of our own fears and accidents still happen. Some serious and some not. Most of them are learning experiences.

So how far do you go to protect your kids?

Dinnertime Is Not Screentime

When we travelled to France a couple of years ago, I noticed that there were kids in every nice restaurant. But these kids weren't chatting nicely with their parents while eating their salade chevre and foie gras, they were all playing on a device.

I wondered if that was a worthy trade-off: kids get a  sense of a formal restaurant and have to eat the food, but they get to immerse themselves in their screen so the adults can have a conversation without disruption.

Family Car Stickers: Cute or Crass?

Do we need to talk about those family car stickers? You know, the stick figures where each adorable sticky represents someone in your family, right down to the goldfish bowl?

These seemingly innocuous figures are creating a lot of debate in the car pool. Do you love them or hate them? Do you think they are cute, but would never put them on the back of your car? Or do you think they are an abomination?

The Voice Behind Hilarious Honest Toddler Revealed (And She's Canadian)!

I love Honest Toddler so much that sometimes I go to her Twitter page just to read over her tweets for the day. Her passive-aggressive outbursts make me laugh, and squirm with recognition that toddlers have feelings too.

If Honest Toddler was in a movie, it would be Baby Geniuses where the two-year-olds know the meaning of life until they "cross over". They pity us grown-ups with our minutiae and focus on unimportant parts of our day, you know like limiting juice and wearing pants.

The voice behind the hilarious and popular Honest Toddler Twitter feed and blog has been a mystery...until now.

[Spoiler Alert!]

Should Restaurants Give Discounts To Well-Behaved Families?

A Washington state family of five got a surprise on their restaurant bill -- but it was a good one -- the owner had given them a well-behaved children discount.

Or at least that is what he typed on the bill. The discount actually came in the form of a bowl of ice cream for the kids to share.

Laura King says her kids ages two, three, and eight, are comfortable in restaurants. She said they were just behaving as they normally do when eating out. She was surprised and delighted by the receipt and a friend put a photo online.

And then it went viral. Along with the question, should restaurants offer well-behaved kid discounts?

The Things I Don't Miss About Little Kids

It is so easy to be maudlin and overly sentimental about parenting. I look at pictures of my kids when they were very little and it physically hurts me to see their chubby cheeks and twinkly eyes. I miss the snuggles and the non-sequiters. I miss the randomness of their tiny minds.

So in an attempt to shore up against wallowing in memories, I have been thinking about the things I do not miss about having really little kids.

Can Public Transit Regulate Strollers?

I love and hate strollers. I love that they make going from point A to point B a lot easier; but negotiating them through crowds, small doorways and over snowdrifts can be very stressful.

The most stressful is getting a stroller on to public transit. I don't know how people with strollers fare in other cities, but in Toronto the transit system is very difficult to use with a stroller. Most TTC stations do not have escalators, and streetcars and buses have stairs and are crowded.
