Dad Pays Daughter To Stay Off Facebook

Seems that at least one teenager has a price. And it is only $200.

A 14-year-old girl asked her dad to help her stay off Facebook so they came up with a Facebook Deactivation Agreement. He gave her $50 to stay off for a month and will give her another $150 to stay off until the end of the year.

The 14-year-old handed over her password, which her dad promptly changed and now she is Facebook-free.

Teen's iPhone Comes With 18-Point Contract From His Mom

When 13-year-old Gregory opened his brand new iPhone, it came with a contract -- not just from the provider -- but from his mother. And it is a long one.

Janell Burley Hofmann wrote up the 18-point contract covering everything from privacy to porn to music to reminding him to look out the window. The mother of five's post on the contract has over 1,000 comments on the Huffington Post, and has been labelled "the first viral sensation of 2013." The contract's popularity shows our deep-seated fear of our teens' love of technology.

Some highlights of the contract:

How To Shield Your Kids From Your Potty Mouth Texts

I have a text group chat with friends on my phone that would burn my kids' ears off; we complain, we gossip, we joke and it is not for public consumption. Now that all three of my kids can read, I have to shield my phone from them so they don't lose their innocence too early.

That is, until I got a Windows 8 Phone -- the Nokia Lumina 920. [I was given the phone to test along with some other bloggers for a month during the busiest time of the year in a #holidayswap].

If A Video Game Distorts History, Does It Matter?

My sons have been trying to convince me that Assassin's Creed, despite it's violent name, is actually a video game worth having because it has a historical perspective.

Their quick historical tour of the game had some non-sensical discussion of Templars, re-living your ancestor's experiences, secret assassin units and vengeance. Then we agreed that a video game in general was not a good basis for a history lesson.

Help! Minecraft Is Taking Over My House

A major crisis in our house last night: my sons' Minecraft server got griefed.

If you know what I'm talking about, then welcome to the club of parents of crafters. If you don't, you soon will. Minecraft is a an open-ended video game that appeals to kids aged 5-105. It may be the first online game that teachers, parents and kids like with equal abandon. There are over 36 million registered users worldwide. It may be the hottest thing to hit home computers, well, since the Internet.

Until the addiction sets in, that is.

Disney Bans Junk Food Marketing on Kids' TV

Disney announced that they will be banning junk food commercials on their stations on shows that are aimed at children. Which means that food advertised promoted on stations such as DisneyXD and Playhouse Disney, as well as Saturday morning cartoons on ABC will have to comply with Disney's nurtitional standards.

Is this a big deal?

Things That I Care About, But You May Not: Greg Wiggle Is Back!

The news that Greg Wiggle is re-joining The Wiggles after a five year absence has made me ridiculously happy.

I'm not sure why I care, since it has been at least a year since a note of Hot Potato was wafting through the house. And Greg was never my favourite Wiggle anyways. He always had a dour, priggish way about him. And his magic tricks were awful. Anthony is the one with all the charisma (sorry Murray and Jeff).

Under 13 And On Facebook

My son is almost 12, he is in Grade 6, and he tells me often that he is the only kid in his year that does not have a Facebook account.

He has one year to go to legally join the site, but we are leaning towards letting him lie and join a year early. It doesn't feel good but I do know that most of his friends have an account and I would rather that he joined while I still had some influence over him, than have him join without me knowing. Because that is what kids do.

If you don't believe me ask the Vice-Principal of your local middle school; they will tell you that all the grade sevens have an account, but many parents don't know it.

The Gift Aftermath. Send Help.

My house looks just like your house right now. Toys lying around that have no home, half-finished art projects, books piled on the counter and corners of tissue paper floating around under the couch.

It is a little much.

Do Teens Have a Right to Privacy?

My son has a cellphone and I admit that I have glanced over, maybe even scrolled through a couple of his texts to see what he was talking about. The many forms of "Whassup?" bored me though, so I haven't rushed to read it again.

But it won't always be so innocent. Cellphones, Facebook and live chats are the medium of choice for teens and we parents are scared because we can't hear what is going on in their lives anymore. So we invade their privacy and we tell ourselves it's okay because teens don't have a right to privacy due to the issues facing them in the big, bad world. And since we foot the bill, we can do what we want. But something about snooping in my kid's private life doesn't sit right with me.
