Do Kids Belong At Rock Concerts?

Adamlevine
He is a handsome man. And #TeamAdam was definitely out in support.

"Mum, why is that woman holding up a pair of underpants to Adam?"

Concert-going with kids does bring up some interesting issues. We took the kids to Maroon 5 last night. It was their first official "rock" concert. As first concerts go, Maroon 5 was a good choice. Just enough street cred to be cool for my 12-year-old, and yet tame enough so that we didn't have to explain too many funny smells or bad outfits to the kids.

Funny Motherhood Rap Reflects Hard Truths But Does It Sell Cars?

In the latest video trying to sell cars while simultaneously appealing to moms, a British mother raps about living large in the "Motherhood" (you are here for good).

The video has gone "viral" (I'm starting to loathe that world, and not just when it comes to flu), raking up over 2.9 million hits -- and for good reason. While it is on the lengthy side, the British mama raps about things we can all relate to including breastfeeding, diaper changing, baby vomit and eating leftovers for dinner -- and she does it all with an enticing British accent.

After 40 Years 'Free To Be You' And Me Is Still Changing The World

I can't imagine my childhood without Free To Be You And Me. I can still recite most of the songs from the album and the purple cover is ingrained in my memory as clearly as my brown gingham bedspread.

It's hard to believe that Free To Be You and Me came out 40 years ago (which makes me the perfect demographic for it's feminist messages). I thought everyone must have soaked in the progressive Free To Be You and Me messages. Imagine my horror when I met people at university who did not know what I was talking about when I mentioned Atalantis or William wants a doll! Let alone the talking babies who needed a diaper change.

We Are A Chris Brown-Free Household And My Kids Know Why

My kids listen to hip-hop, rap and top ten music. And listening to that kind of current music comes at a price. They hear and see things that are not part of our family's values and may not be appropriate for their age. (Note: it is not a free-for-all.)

But part of allowing the kids to listen to current music is making sure that we talk about what they see and hear and the "teachable moments" come fast and furious. We were watching the American Music Awards last Sunday night when Pink's amazing and troubling performance came on. My second-grade daughter asked me: "why are they hitting each other and then in love?"

Tough question on many levels.

Katy Perry's Cupcake Bra On A Kid Is Not So Sweet

Two summers ago our kids loved singing Katy Perry's California Gurls (against my better judgement). They would yell at the top of their lungs: "bikinis on top!" During this period, we were in New York eating at a deli and my son pointed to a large wall mural of matzoh balls nestled in a spoon and yelled: "Look! Bikinis!" (They did kind of look like - umm... bikinis, for lack of a better word.)

From that day forward, matzoh balls have taken on a double meaning in our family. But I should have paid more attention to Katy Perry and known that cupcakes were actually the bikini-fillers for kids.

Madonna Wishes She Was Tougher After Seeing Lourdes Smoking

Madonna has made a career of pushing boundaries, but just like most mothers she was caught unaware when her 15-year-old daughter did the same thing.

A photo of Lourdes casually smoking a cigarette was brought to Madonna's (and the world's) attention recently. Madonna was "not too happy" about her daughter smoking, she tells Harry Smith of the Today Show (check out the video below).

Beyonce Breastfeeds Blue Ivy in Public

Beyonce reportedly breastfed little Blue Ivy in public. Yes, in public at a restaurant in New York City. (Insert joke about the heavens opening up or the fake pregnancy here.) And I think that is pretty cool, especially considering all the fighting going on about public breastfeeding.

According to US Weekly, Beyonce and JayZ took their 7-week-old baby for a casual lunch in NYC's West village:

Why So Blue, Beyonce? Why Do We Care About Celebrity Pregnancies?

In case you missed it, Beyonce had her baby. Unless you have been hiding in seclusion with no access to any form of media or public contact, this is not news.

JayZ and Beyonce's little princess is named Blue Ivy Carter. The current theory is that Blue is after JayZ's album Blueprint and Ivy is a riff on the Roman numerals for four (IV), the name of Beyonce's current album and the couple's favourite number. Personally, I hate the use of everyday words as first names. Poor little Blue will have to live with the 'why so Blue?' jokes for the rest of her life. But I guess she can retaliate with, "an apple a day" joke to you-know-who.

What's Up With Muppetmania? Do The Muppets Still Matter?

When I first heard that Disney was rebooting The Muppets, I didn't really give it a second thought. They were funny when I was kid, but the decades-old movies are a bit painful to watch these days and their goody-two-shoe optimism has had its day.

But then the trailers and the spoofs came out and it felt like the Muppets were in on the joke. Could this be a reboot of characters from my childhood without all the cynicism and sexed-up characters that plague all the other comebacks from my youth?

When Did You Know That You Were a Mom?

Despite what the movies tell you, sometimes feeling like a mom doesn't come with the pink lines on the stick or the moment the baby is handed to you.

Sometimes it takes a little longer to understand that this parenthood thing is permanent and so real that you can almost see the line going from your heart to their little body. For every person that moment when the realization hits home is different.

What was that moment for you?
