Is Bald Barbie Coming to A Store Near You?

Barbie is known for her luxurious blonde hair, twinkly blue eyes, extensive and inappropriate wardrobe and, of course, her unrealistic figure.

But two moms want to make her more relevant to their daughters. They are petitioning Mattel through Facebook to come out with "Bald and Beautiful Barbie". Both their daughters have lost their hair to cancer treatments and the moms think that releasing a bald doll will normalize the girls' situation and make them feel beautiful and special. In turn, a bald doll will help other girls facing similar situations.

Pink or Blue? Is It Important to Find Out A Baby's Gender While Pregnant?

I got asked this a lot: "Do you know what you are having?"

Our usual answer to that question was: A) a baby B) a big meal C) what do you think I'm having? D) a human, unless that alien abduction dream was true.

At which point the asker would then try and guess, either by using some superstition that had to with my skin, eating habits, the way the wind blows, the size of my stomach or something else with little reliability.

But is knowing the gender of your baby really that important?

Would You Let Your Boy Buy a "Girly" Toy?

The world is divided into male and female. The toy stores want us to know it, the toy manufacturers want us to know it and, often, the comments here on this blog want me to know it.

But once in a while a kid will tiptoe over the line, sometimes with intent, with curiosity and sometimes just because sparkly, purple things are nice to look at.

Break Out the Glitz: Toddlers and Tiaras Comes to Canada

Some people discount extremists like the Human Barbie mom who gave her daughter a credit for liposuction for Christmas. But I am more apt to see those people as a sign of our cultural times.

I don't think it is normal to give a child a credit for a future plastic surgery, but the fact that the story is dominating our news cycle is a clue to what we hold dear in our society. It's gross, and yet we want to hear more.

It's the same with Toddlers and Tiaras. We love to hate it.

Demi Lovato Blasts Disney for Eating Disorder Joke

Inappropriate comments and suggestive jokes are becoming more and more commonplace on Disney's tween shows. But Demi Lovato, a former Disney star took to Twitter to call Disney out on them.

Lovato who left the show So Random, to enter rehab for bulimia and self-injury, blasted a tweet to the Disney PR team after a hearing a joke making light of eating disorders. A character on the dance show Shake It Up said: "I could just eat you up, well if I ate."

She tweeted: "I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress' from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke about.."

All Pinked Up and Nothing to Build: Lego for Girls

We love Lego here at Chaos. There are Star Wars sets and headless minifigs lying all over the house. There are corrupted cars and colourful towers piling up in the corners. And we aren't alone.

What parent hasn't had a nostalgic moment putting together a Lego set? What parent hasn't shouted with frustration after finding a misplaced piece near the end of the instructions? And what parent hasn't screamed with agony after standing on a tiny brick lying on the ground?

And yet, Lego is one of the few toys that kids and parents both love. We feel good about the educational and motor skill development that comes from playing with the little bricks, and experience a moment of parental pride in our sons' obvious brilliance when they complete 87 steps in a short time.

But what about the girls?

Toy Store Drops Sexist Division, Will Others Follow?

I was cruising the aisles of Toys R Us and was a little shocked to find myself in a sea of pink. Pink shelves, pink signs, pink products. And then a few aisles later I'm in a sea of blue.

It was a bit over-the-top. I understand that marketers feel very strongly that Beyblades are for boys. But I happened to be buying one for my daughter. Was I the only one in the boys' section buying a gift for a girl? Are there people buying gifts for boys in the girls' section?

Kilts and Yoga Pants Under Fire in School Uniform Debate

Two Catholic schools have been struggling with what the female students have been sporting on their bottom half and it has hit the news cycle.

The Durham Catholic District School Board ruminated about banning the classic schoolgirl kilt after complaints of the girls rolling them up to show some leg. The Board debated it for a "few hours" before deciding to keep the skirt.

School Bans Hard Balls and the Media Makes Jokes

I tune in to Saturday Night Live each week while my husband snores beside me just to catch Seth Myers on Weekend Update. (I know, we are a wild and crazy bunch!)

But this Saturday, through my sleepy haze, I heard Seth mention Toronto. He was taking a Toronto school to task for banning "hard balls" in the playground. He was wondering if the principal was going to put a hinge in the teeter-totter next. (Silly Seth, there hasn't been a see-saw in a school playground in years.)
