Celebrities And Moms Around The World Advocate For Breastfeeding

Pink
Pink may be a rock star and a mother but she is also a "militant breastfeeding" activist and she has words for anyone who may disagree with her.

She recently told a British talk show that she almost got into a fight with a man who commented that breastfeeding in public was "disgusting", even though she was using a cover.

She also breastfed during a radio interview with Ryan Seacrest, telling him that her left boob "was more talented" than her right. (Those of us who breastfed know exactly what she is talking about.) She added that she had to take out her nipple rings because of the sprinkler action (sorry, I don't know what she is talking about.)

I Took a "Dangerous" Drug to Breastfeed: Does That Make Me Extreme?

I don't consider myself extreme, but according to this post in the Daily Beast I am an extreme breastfeeder.

I took drugs to increase my milk, I pumped in the middle of the night, and I took weird herbs. If the writer only knew that I also fed my son with a tube at my breast for FIVE months, I think she might self combust.

Call me fanatical, extreme, crazy or sane. I don't care. I did what felt right. I hope you did too, whatever form that took.

Why Does Mayor Bloomberg Wants To Lock Up Baby Formula?

First, he took away New Yorkers giant sodas and now Mayor Bloomberg has his sights set on baby formula in hospitals.

Bloomberg's new breastfeeding program, Latch On (yes, really), will make sure that formula is kept behind door and no formula swag or keepsakes will be given out.

Reality Show About Breastfeeding & Other "Extreme Parenting Choices" Coming To A TV Near You

You know what the world needs? A show that would normalize breastfeeding. A show that showed that nursing in public and nursing kids older than nine months is a normal, uneventful part of life.

You know what the world is getting? A show on extended breasfeeding by the makers of Dance Moms. I can only imagine that the Collins Avenue production will be bringing its usual light touch to the issues of parenting.

Feminists Are More Likely To Be Attachment Parents

A recent study says that feminists are more likely to be, or at least agree with, attachment parenting values such as co-sleeping, carrying your baby and extended breastfeeding than non-feminists.

This isn't really news to me. Since I am a (self-identified) feminist and I carried my baby (and strollered), co-slept and breastfed two of my kids until they were about two that seems right to me. So did many of my friends who would most likely self-identify as a feminist (at least until there is some kind of test available). And from my totally anecdotal, biased view, my friends who do not think of themselves as feminists did not breastfeed very long and find all those ideas kind of icky. (And yes, I am friends with people with different political views. I hope you are too.)

Is Time Magazine's Cover Of Mom Breastfeeding 3-Year-Old Too Much?

I breastfed my kids until they were two. I co-slept, I slinged and I strollered. I even have attachment parenting guru, Dr. Sears, sitting right here on my shelf and I loved it.

But I don't like the latest Time magazine cover.

Is Motherhood Replacing Sexism?

I admit it, I have been asking myself this question quietly for a while: has motherhood replaced sexism as a way to keep women out of the workforce?

I'm just not sure of the answer.

But Elizabeth Badinter is. She is a famous philosopher and privileged academic from France whose new book, The Conflict: Does Modern Motherhood Undermine the Status of Women?, is making waves in the media on both sides of the Atlantic. (And is continuing our state of awe over French parenting.)

Dunking An Oreo in Breastmilk? An Ad Goes Viral

I admit it, I still don't get it.

Why are pictures of breastfeeding so controversial?

An ad of a breastfeeding baby holding an Oreo, which seems to be just a mock-up of an ad, has hit the Internet this week. Is it beautiful? Inappropriate? Disgusting?

Having a breastfeeding issue? Someone giving you the evil eye for nursing in public? Who are you going to call? The Milk Truck!

The blue and white striped van with a breast perched on the top is a mobile art installation that broadcasts the message that breastfeeding is a right, anywhere. Julie Miller, the Pittsburgh artist and driver of the truck, will soon be in Toronto for a performance art exhibition about women and art.

Guest Post: Does Travelling With Kids Deserve All the Bad Media?

When my family walked on to the plane to Barcelona last summer we were extremely disappointed (to put it mildly) to see that it was an old plane with no in-seat entertainment. Seven hours without movies or TV, how would our kids survive? But the plane load of families survived, I can't even recall hearing any child cry for more than two minutes.  But yet, the story you usually hear in the media is how people hate flying with kids. Why is that? My friend and travel writer, Corinne McDermott, the founder of Have Baby Will Travel, wonders too in her guest post.

Guest Post:

Another day, another baby on a plane story. The most current headlines involve two-year-old Natalie Vieau and her family being booted off a JetBlue flight departing Turks & Caicos for Boston.

It seems that the toddler had a temper tantrum and the parents were struggling to get her into her seat. The pilot chose to kick them off and they had to spend another night away before returning home.
