There are reports that Christian Grey has fathered a baby boom.
Well not exactly fathered, more like inspired.
(If you don't know what I am talking about, be happy. Christian Grey is the bossy protagonist of the "mommy porn" book Fifty Shades of Grey. A book that I did not enjoy, but since it has been topping the bestseller lists for months I am obviously in the minority.)
According to Babycenter, their forums are filled with women saying that the racy book helped them get pregnant. One woman even called the vaguely S&M themed-book her "female Viagra". Other media outlets of followed suit.
In order for a social phenomenon to create a statistically noticeable shift in baby-having, it would have to happen in a society where most people abstain from sex most of the time and contraception use is really rare. 50 Shades or "blackout babies" probably exist, but they're going to get lost in the noise of people conceiving during all the sex they have just because they want to.
Whether or not the books have inspired more people to have unprotected sex, or just more sex in general will not necessarily resonate on the record books. But I am very confident in saying that the next 50 Shades of Grey trend to make headlines will be the names Christian, Anastasia and Ana topping the baby names chart.
In the meantime, the big question is who should play Christian Grey in the movie and what does he really look like?
Want more chaos? Last year, I (again, a coincidence) asked if women had given up sex for motherhood.
