Is She A Bad Mom? Giuliana Rancic Puts Marriage Before Motherhood

Celebrity Giuliana Rancic says her marriage comes before motherhood.

She said that she puts husband Bill, over their 5-month-old Duke, even though he is the "cutest baby ever".

She told Us Weekly: "We're husband and wife, but we're also best friends, and it's funny because a lot of people, when they have kids, they put the baby first, and the marriage second," says the 37-year-old breast-cancer survivor. "That works for some people. For us, I find, we put our marriage first and our child second, because the best thing we can do for him is have a strong marriage."

Holly Madison Plans On Eating Her Placenta... And She's Not The Only One

Holly Madison doesn't have much reason to be in the news lately. Perhaps you have already forgotten her stint as Hugh Hefner's chief bunny. In case you have retained your dignity and lost touch with her, she is awaiting the very iminent arrival of her first baby.

I know this because she announced that she plans to eat the placenta after her little bundle of joy arrives. This statement has propelled her back into our unsuspecting lives. (She may already be chowing down, as she checked into the hospital on Monday morning.)

Proponents of doing it say that consuming your placenta -- raw, cooked or in pill form -- will ward off post-partum depression, revitalize your tired body and pump you full of iron. Many mammals consume their placenta following birth, though researchers don't know why, and so proponents say that it is a natural part of the birthing process.

The rest of us just think it is a little gross.

Moms Tackle The Big Issues

What are the big issues that moms face today?

Work-home life balance. Marriage. Finding time for yourself. Guilt.

All of these issues were tackled on the Today Show with three of their experts. I am going to be honest with you, I don't usually love expert panels. They are often too superficial and populated by women who seem to have it all. But I thought these women did a good job on touching on some of the issues that face us all. (And yes, they are beautiful and have lots and lots of kids and seem to have it all.)

Ben Affleck Tells The Truth And Says Marriage Is Work

Ben Affleck didn't exactly show off his romantic side at the Oscars when he thanked his wife of "10 Christmases" Jennifer Garner for all her hard work on their marriage.

He said, while stumbling over his words:  "It’s good, it is work, but it’s the best kind of work, and there’s no one I’d rather work with.”

Garner_affleck

The fact that Affleck didn't fall into schmoopy-doopyism's has some gossip columnists wondering if the Affleck-Garner marriage is in trouble. But I found it a refreshing break from the contrived "soulmate" kinds of thank-yous that generally take up the Oscar broadcast.

Stop Worrying: Anxiety and Stress Doesn't Affect Fertility Or Pregnancy

When I was first diagnosed with a placental abruption and put on bedrest for 8 weeks, someone (who shall remain nameless) asked me if it was the stress that did it.

As if stress could actually physically move my placenta a millimetre away from the uterine wall and make it start bleeding. Please. Blaming stress on pregnancy issues or fertility problems is blaming the victim -- and there is very little science behind it.

Slate did a takedown of this old wives tale and explained that stress and anxiety has very little affect on pregnancy or fertility issues.

Allison Schaffer reports that a British study in 2011 looked at 14 different studies on IVF and reported that anxiety did not change outcomes: "In other words, women with more extreme levels of anxiety or depression were just as likely to get pregnant after a single cycle as women with milder levels."

What about pregnancy? Can stress and anxiety harm your unborn baby? A Danish study looked at 78,000 Dutch women and found that those with the highest self-reported stress levels gave birth a mere two days earlier than the women who reported little stress. In fact, reports Amanda Schaffer, fetuses whose mothers reported higher levels of distress tended to be more active in utero, a positive developmental sign.

So, if the next time a doctor or well-meaning relative gives you the "just relax for the baby's sake" speech. You can tell them to lay off because being told to constantly "think positive" is just a recipe for more stress, and while that won't harm the baby, it can cause heartburn.

Were you ever told to "just relax"? Do you think anxiety affected your pregnancy?

Beyoncé's Blue Ivy Reads Flashcards And Is Perfect (I Think)

It's time to talk about Beyoncé. I  know I am just joining a chorus of voices discussing the star whose heights are so stratospheric that she feels beyond human.

Beyoncé may be the world's biggest star, wife, and mother. All of which she discusses semi-openly, letting us peek into her thoughts -- but all on her own terms.

I have to admit that I am one of her fans, even though I don't always think that her sartorial choices align herself with the fierce feminist ideals that she supposedly upholds and sings about. And yes, I have thoughts on her Mrs. Carter tour. But today, I want to discuss how she is framing motherhood into her persona.

Should Restaurants Give Discounts To Well-Behaved Families?

A Washington state family of five got a surprise on their restaurant bill -- but it was a good one -- the owner had given them a well-behaved children discount.

Or at least that is what he typed on the bill. The discount actually came in the form of a bowl of ice cream for the kids to share.

Laura King says her kids ages two, three, and eight, are comfortable in restaurants. She said they were just behaving as they normally do when eating out. She was surprised and delighted by the receipt and a friend put a photo online.

And then it went viral. Along with the question, should restaurants offer well-behaved kid discounts?

Parents of Twins Get Double Maternity Leave

Parents of twins are suing the government saying both parents should be able to take 35 weeks off so they can care for their twins at the same time.

The Federal Court of Appeal has dismissed the suit, but it is an interesting question. Their argument is that parents of children born a year apart are entitled to two leaves of 35 weeks, so parents of twins should get the same treatment.

The Things I Don't Miss About Little Kids

It is so easy to be maudlin and overly sentimental about parenting. I look at pictures of my kids when they were very little and it physically hurts me to see their chubby cheeks and twinkly eyes. I miss the snuggles and the non-sequiters. I miss the randomness of their tiny minds.

So in an attempt to shore up against wallowing in memories, I have been thinking about the things I do not miss about having really little kids.

Funny Motherhood Rap Reflects Hard Truths But Does It Sell Cars?

In the latest video trying to sell cars while simultaneously appealing to moms, a British mother raps about living large in the "Motherhood" (you are here for good).

The video has gone "viral" (I'm starting to loathe that world, and not just when it comes to flu), raking up over 2.9 million hits -- and for good reason. While it is on the lengthy side, the British mama raps about things we can all relate to including breastfeeding, diaper changing, baby vomit and eating leftovers for dinner -- and she does it all with an enticing British accent.
