Mom Wants To Ban Acorns To Protect Her Allergic Kids

You know when someone starts a sentence with "I’m not a crazy mom...", that something crazy is about to happen.

Donna Giustizia is asking the city of Vaughan to have the oak trees next to her child's high school torn down because the acorns may pose a risk to kids who suffer nut allergies. [I'm sure there is appropriate squirrel joke to add in here.]

Doctors say that they have never seen a child have an anaphaylactic reaction to an acorn, since they would most likely have to chew on the hard and bitter nut which are usually found on the ground amongst the rotting leaves. This mother is worried about the appearance of acorns which could be used to taunt her allergic teen. As reported in the Star, the mother said:

“The acorns are not only presenting a risk to the tree nut-allergic students but it is also becoming a great cause of anxiety amongst all students with nut allergies,” Giustizia wrote in her request to appear before the committee, adding that acorns “can also be used to bully and torment children.”

Nut allergies are a serious issue. Kids die every year from anaphylaxis after accidentally being exposed to nuts. Most of the schools I know are completely nut-free and most parents go along with it to protect other kids.

I think it is worthwhile to discuss the issue of responsibility when it comes to nut allergies -- where does the school and society's responsibility end, and the individual's begin?

Because there are lines. And this mother, is obviously very far across it. And by doing so, he is giving (the sometimes paranoid) parents of allergic kids a bad name.

I have no doubt people are sending her Chip and Dale paraphernalia right now.

Want more chaos? I had conveniently forgotten the time my kid refused to get haircuts while at the salon. There are all appropriately shorn now.
