Olympic Moms Stir It Up

Who doesn't feel that tug of emotion when you see an Olympic athlete hugging their mother? You would have to be made of stone to not get a little teary at shots of the parents in the Olympic stands. And the commercials may be even worse.

I'm always interested in the role of the parents of Olympic athletes. Did they push their kids? Or were they taken along for a ride? Did they work hours in the bingo hall to raise money? Did they mortgage their house just for this dream? Did they push their kids, when their kids wanted to give up?

Or were they reluctant participants?

Summer is for Playing, Not For School

Do you worry about the "summer slide"? Do you read the articles about how to keep your kids engaged over the summer? Do you do the activities?

Don't look here for those tips. I think summer is time off from homework. I think that learning can be done in an informal way, through playing outside, swimming, fighting with your siblings, and even video games and being bored can make your kids smarter.

Real Moms Showing Off Real Bodies Goes Viral

A group of moms exposed their post-baby bellies to the world and the world took notice.

Some bloggers from Connecticut got sick of all the pressure on new moms to "get their body back" (to which I once again ask; where did it go?) so quickly after having a baby. They got together in sports bras and tank tops and did a photo shoot of their real bodies sporting real belllies.

Could Whooping Cough Outbreak Have Been Stopped By Vaccines?

When I was 38 weeks pregnant there was a whooping cough outbreak at my son's nursery shool. Gathering all my pregnant paranoia, I took my son to the doctor and insisted that they test him because he had a slightly runny nose.

Results came back two days later and indeed he did have whooping cough, which could have been fatal to my newborn. A flurry of prescriptions went out and every member of our extended family had to go on antibiotics. Even my obstetrician had to get in on the act and be on top of all my scheduling to make sure that my pregnancy didn't go too late (I'm a VBAC), but gave me enough time to finish my antibiotics.

Parenting in the Summer of the Gun

I admit it, I am feeling a little anxious these days. I am dropping my son at sleepover camp for two weeks and it is hard to let go. I know that he will be in a safe and loving environment. I know that he will be happy and grow in ways that will enhance his entire year.

But what parent isn't holding their child a little closer this month? What parent hasn't asked themselves the 'what ifs', and the 'why them'?

5 Truths About Moms Online

What would most moms save in a fire?

  1. Engagement ring
  2. Smartphone
  3. Passports

If you guessed engagement ring, you would be wrong. According to a new study entitled: "The Truth About Moms" by McCann Central almost 50% of women would save their smartphone over their other possessions listed. I do love my Blackberry, but I'm not sure I would sacrifice my antique ring that I adore.

The international study also highlighted some interesting facts about how mothers use technology worldwide.

Even 6-Year-Old Girls Want To Be Sexy, Says Study

A recent study reports that 6-year-old girls want to be sexy and think that sexy clothes make you more popular.

This is the first study that identified self-sexualization in young girls. We already know that tweens and young women equate sexiness with power and popularity. It would be hard not to, considering the images that girls see everyday on TV, in movies and all around them. (Have you seen a La Senza ad lately? I almost fainted on the subway!)
