Dunking An Oreo in Breastmilk? An Ad Goes Viral

I admit it, I still don't get it.

Why are pictures of breastfeeding so controversial?

An ad of a breastfeeding baby holding an Oreo, which seems to be just a mock-up of an ad, has hit the Internet this week. Is it beautiful? Inappropriate? Disgusting?

The ad is entitled Basic Instinct and the tagline, Milk's Favourite Cookie, is cute. Though, obviously that baby is too young for an Oreo. And I have no doubt that if the ad hit the airwaves there would be outcry from the anti-junk food lobby (I could see myself writing a post on that).

But it will never be released in North America (if at all). Because despite the beautiful photo, those incredible eyes and the normalcy of a baby nursing, people would go crazy if a breastfeeding ad was used in a commercial.

Facebook, despite saying that they only take down breastfeeding ads if there are complaints, has already removed this ad from at least one Facebook page (continuing in their long history of being anti-breastfeeding). Sadly, Kate Gulbransen who runs the breastfeeding site Hygeia Breast Pumps had it removed within hours of posting it.

I would love to see breastfeeding in ads, on TV, in movies and everywhere else so it could be normalized for nursing mothers (and possibly show the haters that it is no big deal). The tremendous reaction to this photo shows me that we have a long way to go.

Want more chaos? Last year, I Mom'd the vote! (yikes, I made up that word)
