Things That I Care About, But You May Not: Greg Wiggle Is Back!
The news that Greg Wiggle is re-joining The Wiggles after a five year absence has made me ridiculously happy.
I'm not sure why I care, since it has been at least a year since a note of Hot Potato was wafting through the house. And Greg was never my favourite Wiggle anyways. He always had a dour, priggish way about him. And his magic tricks were awful. Anthony is the one with all the charisma (sorry Murray and Jeff).
But he was the lead singer, so I grew attached to him after many early morning hours hearing his voice mixed up in my semi-conscious dreams.
And then, suddenly he was gone without even a good-bye. Turned out he was suffering from a serious and rare neurological disorder. And then just like that, he is back. Was it Dorothy's Rosy tea? Or something more sinister like money troubles?
I told my kids the happy news but they didn't even blink an eye. In fact, it was the opposite. My 6-year-old daughter wondered what happen to Sam, the yellow Wiggle of her childhood.
The lead characters in kids' TV shows are so much a part of our home life, it can be upsetting when they leave or change. (Don't even get me started on Steve leaving Blue's Clues to go to "college" ie. working as an extra on Law and Order.) They are our kids' companions and ours as well. We had to take a minute to explain that Sam was going to be okay and will be enjoying his life outside of the yellow jersey.
In the first few years of my son's life I think I spent as much time sleeping with Greg and the Wiggles as I did with my husband. (I don't mean that in a dirty way!)
But the Wiggles do not rank up there with the Kratt brothers as my personal favourites. Smart, funny, goofy and brave -- what's not to like? Especially, when you are fighting with your husband over taking out the garbage.
I have missed the current crop of TV entertainers. Who do your kids love? More important, who do you love?
Want more chaos? Last year, I wrote about having a mommy cold and posted my recipe for chicken soup. (which is funny because I was just sick last week. I wonder if I need to beware of the last week in January?)
