Carla Sarkozy Is Not Only Mom Who Craves a Smoke

I wonder if new mom Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has had a cigarette yet. She famously broke some taboos when she said one month before the October 19 birth of baby Giulia that she was desperate to smoke again.

From the sounds of it, she will be joining the ranks of other smoking moms.

Most mothers who smoke do so in secret and, as this Macleans article points out, feel guilty about it. It doesn't sound like Carla will feel guilty but who knows how new motherhood will affect her.

The article details the lengths that moms who smoke go through to hide their habit from friends and family. Lies, extra clothing and cleaning supplies are all part of the secret repertoire.

At least Carla didn't smoke during pregnancy, though the danger of smoking around your babies is also well-documented and includes an increased risk of SIDS and asthma.

I'm sure most of us have fallen to the secret call of a vice or two; though smoking isn't my personal issue - my addictions are more food related. When I was pregnant I craved runny cheese and was known to eat sushi in the privacy of my own home.

What did you miss while you were pregnant? Do you ever sneak a smoke?

Want more chaos? Last year I wrote about the viscious politics around kindergarten snack programs.
