My Top Reasons To Love Pregnancy
I loved being pregnant so much that I would offer to be a surrogate for someone - if I was younger, knew someone who was desperate, and didn't worry that I would want to keep the baby, and most importantly, if hadn't read Handmaid's Tale a few hundred times in the early '90s.
I know lots of people hated being pregnant but I just don't understand - there are so many reasons to love it. Here are some of mine:
Never Having to Hold in Your Stomach: I carry a little (!) weight around my stomach so as soon as I saw that double pink line I never had to worry about camouflaging it, or sucking it in ever again.
Eating: I was pregnant with my first before that huge list of foods came out to avoid which meant I had a much more satisfying pregnancy the first time around. But even the subsequent times, I loved having people offer me food all the time. I craved peaches and still remember the happiness when I ate them. I also have particularly fond memories of a chocolate fountain while eight months pregnant.
Sitting, Lots of It: Who can steal a chair from a pregnant woman? Who can deny a pregnant woman a right to a little R&R? Only evil people.
Sex: It was good. Sorry if you didn't think so. As my friend said: It was the only time I ever understood what it is like to think like a man.
Feeling Special: People open doors for you and are extra-especially nice. It is like you are royalty. But it is more than that. Creating life is an incredible feeling and the knowledge that comes with that is awesome in the true sense of the word.
Being Bitchy: No one gets mad at a pregnant woman being a bit snappish.
Being Bonded With the Dad: Pregnancy brings a couple together - the excitement, the anxiety, the eating. (Too bad about sleep deprivation driving you apart.)
New Wardrobe with Stretchy Waistbands: Yey to comfort.
A New Journey: The excitement of starting a new journey, changing your life and your family is intoxicating.
There are downsides of being pregnant too - the aches and pains, heartburn, weird dreams, endless doctor's appointments. But when I tally it up, the upsides far outweigh the down.
What about you? What are your favourite parts about being pregnant?
Want more chaos? Last year, I wrote: Hello, my name is Emma about my name being in the top ten of kid names.
