What's Your Gift-Giving Profile?
My husband let it slip that he has an Xbox Kinect hiding in the garage. It's been there for weeks. I really shouldn't have been surprised.
He was tossing out some lame bribes using the Kinect such as: if you eat that broccoli I'll get you a Kinect. He is not much of a gamer so it's not for him. It's just that he is compulsive when it comes to new technology -- he must own everything first, especially when it comes to the kids. This is a reaction against his own childhood of having a black and white television with a rotary dial.(Imagine trying to explain to your kids getting up to change the channel of which there were only 13. Hysterics.)
So we have a Playstation, a Wii, many large flat screens and a universal remote that actually works. I am not keen on adding another game platform to our crowded line-up but obviously that choice was taken away from me.
When it comes to gift giving my husband loves to give technology. He isn't really good at giving anything else.
I have a gift-giving profile too. In my family, money spent represented amount of love felt. So I like to shower with gifts. Eight days of Chanukah? Eight gifts each (some of them are small like colouring books and mittens sort of like you would find in a stocking). A little Christmas thrown in? Let's give something then too.
We have tried to limit the gift giving by assigning one day out of the eight to each child. That is their giving day. Since we have a family of five, plus grandparents that takes care of seven of the gift-giving days and the extra one usually gets lost in the shuffle.
So we can check off one day for the Kinect and one day for a couple games (any suggestions?) and now I'm off the hook. And to be honest, even though I'm a bit pissed the Kinect is going to be pretty cool.
