Would You Hire a Supermodel to be Your Nanny?

Erica Ehm spent many weeks looking for a live-in nanny for her two kids. She thought she knew what she wanted but she surprised herself by liking and hiring a former supermodel. And now the Yummy Mummy has a former supermodel living in her house, taking care of her kids, cooking her meals and tidying her house.

A 6-foot, blonde, beautiful model in her twenties. (Read Erica's take on it here.)

Would you hire a beautiful, young, articulate 20-something to live in your house? Would the fear of your husband being tempted stop you? Could your own insecurities stop you from hiring someone great?

It raises a lot of interesting questions doesn’t it? Issues around trust, marriage and women’s inherent competition with each other. The idea that men can’t be trusted when there is youthful beauty around can be found as far back as the ancient myths. Popular culture still propagates the idea that men want arm candy: the media shows us men throwing off their wives for younger, hotter versions all the time.

Rationally, we don’t worry about our husbands cheating on us just because of proximity. Because if access to a hottie was it took then we don’t want them anyways. So obviously, the right answer is not to be biased against someone because they are young and beautiful. But what about the irrational place that so many of us dip down into every once in a while, that dark place where women’s self-esteem is nil? That irrational voice can be very compelling, so who wins in this situation?

I worry about a lot of things, but I don’t worry about my husband leaving me for a younger model. So yes, I would hire a supermodel if that was the person who fit our family, and I hope that she would educate my daughter on why being beautiful isn’t the most important thing in life. But I’m sure there would be days when my muffin top was hanging out and grey roots would be growing in that I would be envious of her beauty. But not of her life, because I have the life I want.

Do we women still fear The Hand That Rocks the Cradle?
