Who Doesn't Love a Good Divorce?

It is shameful, and it is our little secret. My husband likes to watch the Bachelor Pad and Dating in the Dark.

It is helpful to be reminded how horrible it is out there, he tells me.

And the out there is everywhere. It's fun to watch the hook-ups, the break-ups and the questionable fun of single life. Added to that is are the joys of watching public divorces.

Who didn’t feel sad and a bit smug when Sandra Bullock got duped? Who isn’t on Team Elin after the truth about Tiger came out?  We love to watch a good public divorce, it reminds us smug marrieds how good we have it.

Bruce Feiler wrote an excellent article in the New York Times, discussing the trend of "divorce porn." He even names Elizabeth Gilbert author of Eat, Pray, Love, the Hugh Hefner of divorce. He goes on in amusing detail to discuss all the ways the public vicariously go through divorce thanks to the media. But while we are watching these marriages implode in front of our eyes, the interesting detail is that the divorce rate in the U.S. is actually declining.

Seems like we just like to watch.
