Closet Catch-up

It wasn’t until I was checking out of the grocery store today that I realized that I was in sweatpants, sweatshirt, my pajama tank top and no undergarments.. Thank goodness for puffy coats and hats.  I have no good excuse for my outfit. It was just a slightly more hectic than usual morning because my hubby was away and I drove all three kids to school and didn’t see the need to get dressed before hopping in the car. The only problem is that once I dropped the kids at school I realized a friend was coming over and I wanted to make a salad for lunch so I dropped in on my neighbourhood store and voila there I was standing at the cash with no bra on (which I realize for some mothers is not an issue but I should not be in public without some harnessing equipment).

I wish I could say that it was a first time event. But I would be lying. Before kids I would not dream of being seen in public without being fully dressed but now those last few minutes of lying horizontal is a worthy trade-off to two minutes in my closet.

Ironically, my friend who was coming for lunch is an especially stylish pal who is off on maternity leave and was coming over to help me choose an outfit for my upcoming TV appearances.

And after our lentil-quinoa salad (see the grocery store was worth it), I am standing in my closet with my recently-applied bra and my Candi Factory underwear going through my closet. And phew, it was some work. Trying things on and then tossing them into the keep or throw pile.

And as exposed as I felt, it was a cathartic process. My friend believes that once you cull and clear all the badly-fitting, stylistically challenged items the more you have to actually wear. She re-invigorated my love of some old things and made me toss some stuff I had been holding on to for when I “lost those last 10”.

Remember those days of living with girlfriends where every outfit got discussed, vetted and tweaked? Those were good style days (of course what could go wrong with my university uniform -- jeans, turtleneck and cowboy boots?)

So my closet is a little emptier, but strangely, I seem to have more to wear.  But I did keep my sweatpants for those morning drives.
