Books for Babes
When my brother and sister-in-law had their baby, they made it pretty clear that they wanted to buy everything themselves. And since they don’t live near us, I was just fine with that. So what do you give to the family that already has everything? In fact, what do you give every new mother?
Books! I had each kid pick their two favourite picture books and sign them, and my hubby and I also picked our favourites. Now their new cousin has a ready-made library. The funny thing is that the kids, without much prompting picked a lot of classics including:
Blue Hat, Green Hat by Sandra Boynton The sound of the word oops is funny every time and then every kid thinks they can read this book themselves.
Goodnight Moon by Maragaret Wise Brown A classic, I don't know why it works but it does
Where’s My Teddy by Jez Alborough, Narrative tension and rhyming, the first big kid book that my kids read
Chicka Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Bill Martin Jr, John Archambault, Louise Ehlert Letters have personality, and the words have rythym
Little Gorilla by Ruth Bornstein We read this one on birthdays.
Where’s Spot? By Eric Hill Is he in the piano?
Dear Zoo, Rod Campbell Peek behind the flaps...
I threw in, the Breaking the Good Mom Myth by Alyson Schafer. I knew she wouldn’t read it, but the title alone speaks volumes to a new mom.
Each child signed their name on their chosen book and we sent them off. And since reading is so good for babies, and for you (and alot better than Baby Einsten videos) you can feel better about this list then a blanket. I know it’s a good idea, and it's mine, so make sure I’m not invited to the baby shower before you put your list together.
What would your list look like?
